Artist’s Note
“Familiar 2020 is one of the earliest drawings I ever placed on clothing and these joggers hold a special place in my heart. I’ve worn my own pair up ladders, through festivals, along mural walls and into cosy studio days, they’re warm, wind-resistant, practical and somehow always make me feel a little braver and more myself. Red tartan is like that for me: bold, classy, a little punk or alternative, timeless, touching so many genres at once. It carries tradition and rebellion in a single pattern.
The artwork itself, originally coloured pencil on toned paper, was inspired by the rich lineage of Scottish and Irish folklore surrounding the Cat Sìth (Scottish Gaelic: Cat Sìth or Cait Sidhe). In the old Highland tales, the Cat Sìth roamed the moors as a fairy creature - sometimes a guardian spirit, sometimes a trickster and in certain stories, even a witch transformed in her ninth and final life. Offerings of milk were left out during Samhain to keep its favour. My three-eyed version isn’t traditional, but it honours that magical ambiguity: familiar, uncanny, protective and a little mischievous.
I also drew from the Victorian era’s ‘catland’ illustrators - artists like Louis Wain and Harry Pointer who dressed cats in hats and ribbons, turning everyday felines into performers, companions and storytellers. I’ve always loved how their work blurred fantasy and domestic life, turning cats into characters with fully imagined worlds. My Familiar belongs to that same lineage: part folklore creature, part Victorian performer, part whimsical guardian.
Seeing him printed over Royal Stewart tartan - a pattern with its own deep history, tied to Highland identity, ceremony, punk fashion, winter warmth and alternative culture - felt immediately right. It’s a print worn by aristocrats, rebels, rock musicians, families at Christmas and muralists on windy scaffolding alike. Something about the combination of tartan and creature makes these joggers feel like a small piece of wearable folklore.
I hope Familiar brings you the same comfort, courage and quiet charm he’s brought me while creating art outdoors, wandering through woodland paths or simply curling up on a cold evening. These joggers are stylish, practical and full of story. I’m excited to keep adding more characters to this little collection of magical everyday wear.”
