✦ Artist's Note

I created Ceannbhán Móna in 2026 for LORE: Mexican & Irish Folklore, a Minaw Collective exhibition at the Embassy of Mexico in Dublin.

The original painting measures 71 × 71 cm and was created using acrylic and spray paint on canvas stretched over board.

I've always been fascinated by the mysterious beauty of Ireland's vast, eerily bleak boglands. They can seem desolate at first glance, yet they're home to extraordinary native plants, each with a character of its own.

I particularly love bog cotton at twilight, when the last sunlight catches its white tufts and makes them shimmer against the darkening, peaty ground. There's something wonderfully otherworldly about them!

I imagined a little fairy who lives among the bog cotton, gathering its soft white fibres and spinning them into thread on her tiny spinning wheel. Around her, golden ribbons of light radiate outwards, curling into intricate Celtic-inspired knotwork, a visible expression of her magical energy.

Bog cotton (Eriophorum angustifolium) is a native sedge, not a true grass. There's a lovely old botanical rhyme:

Sedges have edges,
rushes are round,
grasses have knees
that bend to the ground.

It describes sedges' often triangular stems, rushes' round stems and grasses' little joints or 'knees'.

I wanted to capture the mysterious beauty of the boglands and the extraordinary life hidden within them. Each plant has its own character and I love imagining the magical beings that might be born of them, little guardians of these wild places, existing somewhere between our world and another. The plants themselves become gateways into this hidden realm, where fairy and plant share a mysterious, symbiotic existence.

Ceannbhán Móna is one of my growing family of Bogland Fairies, each inspired by a different native plant. I'm developing this collection further, creating new paintings and exploring the individual characters and stories of these little bogland inhabitants.

Few have seen Ceannbhán Móna at work. But when the evening breeze sets the white cotton dancing, perhaps you'll catch a glimpse of her golden threads between the wild, windswept rushes and the delicate stems of her cotton grass.

I hope Ceannbhán Móna inspires a little curiosity about the magic hidden in the natural world. After all, somewhere between the roots, the rushes and the drifting bog cotton, another realm might be just a wet, boggy step away.
