✦ Artist's Note

Witches' Garden began with my love of the magical and mysterious, and the idea of a world where cats have their own secret friendships, curious customs and extraordinary adventures.

As I painted this little trio, I imagined the lives these feline characters might lead. A little cottage tucked away in an enchanted garden, filled with peculiar belongings, unusual plants and the everyday rituals of a rather unconventional household. I imagined them brewing potions, cosily sharing stories over tea and occasionally finding themselves in a little mischief when things don't quite go to plan.

I particularly enjoyed creating their elaborate costumes and magical hats, imagining their individual personalities and the curious relationship between them. Their tortoiseshell familiar seemed to belong right there in the middle of it all, a wise and ever-present member of the family, quietly observing their antics and perhaps knowing a great deal more than either of them.

The sepia and autumn tones were an important part of the painting. I wanted to capture that nostalgic feeling of stepping into an old illustrated storybook. As a child, I would pore over their illustrations, each one a window into another world, wondering what might lie just beyond the page.

There's something about autumn that makes the world feel particularly magical to me. The changing colours, the crisp, cold air, the fading light and the rustling leaves seem to suggest that something mysterious might be happening just beyond our sight.

I like to imagine the Witches' Garden as a place where ordinary domestic life and extraordinary happenings are woven together. Where a quiet afternoon spent gardening or drinking tea might be followed by a moonlit adventure and where even the quietest members of the household have their own stories to tell.

I hope this little scene invites you to wander into their world for a moment and imagine what secrets might be waiting beyond the garden gate.

After all, who knows what cats get up to when we're not looking?
